ABSTRACT

In this chapter, Hill and Cole examine the overall economic context in which inequalities are reproduced. The context is a class-based capitalist mode of production. They apply three different theoretical perspectives, functionalism, Marxism and post-modernism to analyse, firstly, social class per se and, secondly; the relationship between social class and education. In doing so, they critique consumption/life-style-based social class classifications. They present and discuss the persistent social class related inequalities in society and in the education system.
