ABSTRACT

The problems of cities and the efforts directed towards their alleviation command global attention because of the increasing proportion of the world's population being affected by such issues. Urbanisation and its consequences are world-wide phenomena and the increasing size and scale of urban settlements are characteristics of the contemporary era. Four out of every ten of the world's population now live in an urban setting and the expectation is that by the year 2000 AD half of the world's inhabitants will be urban dwellers.
