ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a review of the main conceptual approaches and empirical research specifically at the intra-urban scale four major areas of research are discussed here: disease mapping, ecological associative analysis, disease diffusion studies and the geography of health care. Thus although disease mapping and associative analyses have long been the central concerns of medical geography the intra-urban literature. The chapter concentrates upon developments in disease diffusion studies and the geography of health care. Medical cartography has long been an important part of medical geography and has contributed much to our understanding of the spatial aspects of human health problems. Behavioural approaches to the study of health services utilisation constitute the second strand of research. For some medical geographers concern with consumer health care behaviour extends beyond the traditional analyses of first contacts with particular elements of the health services system.
