ABSTRACT

An increasingly socially diversified China has opened itself up to the world and to the power of the internet and other modern communication devices. Four recent events show the power of the internet to promote living in truth. The power of the internet has been enhanced by the spread of telecommunications technology throughout China. According to China Daily, there were 113 million broad-band internet users by May, 2010. An organization QQ labels China an enemy of the internet. The government has had some success diverting public attention from domestic politics to foreign affairs, where nationalist appeals can unify the public against China's enemies. There have been concerns that the internet might be used to whip up anti-foreign sentiment, either by popular xeno-phobes or by the government itself. The internet and all the other communication devices of the information age provide useful tools for decentralized social movements and the emergence of a vibrant civil society in China.
