ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how technology is being used in young children's second language (L2) classrooms around the world, and attempt to present guidelines for teachers who desire to include technology tools in their teaching. If it really takes a village to raise a child, technology provides L2 teachers with opportunities to connect the child with a global village. According to the 2011 K-12 Horizon Report, today's youngest children will enter primary schools where technology is mainstream and digital literacy is as important a skill as reading and writing. Technology is ubiquitous in our daily lives, playing an increasingly important role in early childhood and pre-primary settings. The growth of literature regarding the use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in education mirrors the increased presence of computers in schools. In a three-year multi-literacy project, S. Hill found that children were able to use technology tools with a skill that far exceeded teacher expectations.
