ABSTRACT
This chapter provides a comprehensive review of the criminological research literature that examines the link between immigration and rates of criminal deviance. We divide our discussion of this research into two distinct periods. The first period of interest includes studies conducted over roughly a fifteen-year periods, from the middle of the1990s through 2010. This is an era where scholars conducted studies generally concerned with questions regarding whether immigration was systematically linked to crime. Much of the research on this topic published since 2010 is generally concerned with documenting how immigration is linked to rates of crime. During the latter period, researchers have focused more specifically on quantifying the causal mechanisms underpinning this relationship. The more recent analyses have both supported the general patterns identified in the earlier period and contributed to a much more nuanced understanding of the complex relationship between immigration and crime.
