ABSTRACT

Beyond the BRICs, which are four of the largest economies in the world, there are some medium-sized economies, which are seen as recent economic risers in the world. Acting on their increasing size and importance in the global economy, these countries are seeking to acquire greater influence within regional and global affairs (vom Haua et al. 2012) Therefore, anyone who is interested in understanding the dynamics of the global political economy has to look beyond the original BRICs (i.e. Brazil, Russia, India and China) towards other countries that have become increasingly influential in the field of global development. Turkey is one of these countries, and thus, has been attracting widespread attention.
