ABSTRACT

Design-based teaching and learning borrow the methods of design practice and the pedagogy of design education in teaching a variety of subjects and thinking skills in K-12 schools. Nationally, designers and design educators work to transform K-12 classrooms as centers of student-guided inquiry and teachers as designers of innovative learning experiences. As an instructional approach, design-based strategies are well suited to developing in children the 21stcentury thinking competencies and problem-solving skills demanded of productive adults in an environment of constant change and uncertainty.
