ABSTRACT

While Korean firms have intensively studied technologies and organizational practices from other countries in the past to improve their performance, they have now acquired excellent technological and managerial knowledge which is valuable to absorb for non-Korean firms. Technologically, Korean firms are particularly strong in knowledge-intensive industries, such as semiconductors and mobile communications. Managerially, they have developed organizational systems and tools in the strategy, leadership and human resource management domains that are highly effective in dynamic business environments. In order to learn from their Korean peers, non-Korean firms should establish strong relationships and rich communication channels with them. Technological and managerial learning is often first conducted most effectively via foreign companies’ local subsidiaries in Korea, which may subsequently transfer the knowledge they have absorbed to other locations.
