ABSTRACT

Envisioning futures is a core role of urban composition. This chapter borrows the concepts of framing, drivers of change, causal layered analysis, scenario development, and signals of change from the forecasting literature to provide tools to conceive, consider, and compose public spaces that are pluripotent (their built-in potentials for change aids resilience and adaptation). Additionally, the chapter outlines practices of editing the narrative landscape – that is, curating and critiquing artwork and literature that embodies public space, and publishing informed visions of potential public spaces – to help frame cogent questions, illuminate drivers of change, provide signals of change, suggest scenarios, and inspire the design of public spaces.
