ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the story of some photography of dressage horses at a competition in Falsterbo, Sweden, told by the photographer himself. The strong reaction to these photographs, not looking for the alleged trophy pictures, provides material for ethical reflections and reflection upon our images of horses. The chapter thus also reflects upon the relation between our ideas and concepts on one hand, and the images we see and how we interpret and remember them on the other. The role of photography and its power to break down pre-conceptualised ideas also has a history that is explored, showing that there appear to be issues of truth in relation to the picturing of horses. We can ask ourselves how developments in photographic technology and social media challenge earlier conventions of equine representation, and discussions on the welfare of the horse.
