ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author describes his teaching philosophy in relation to and building upon four of the themes of this volume: grounding experience-based education in place; engaging with a place to encourage students to have meaningful interactions with local communities and histories. Envisioning the Native American South as one of the many “Souths” and histories of the region, one that is often forgotten. Teaching with an eye toward the future of archaeological methods and theory, Native American rights, and rural North Carolina. Native American history is rarely told in many areas of the United States at any educational level; the South is not unique in this regard. Students seldom learn about Native American societies, cultures, and histories until they reach college, and such courses are often electives only taken by a small percentage of any student body.
