ABSTRACT

The League of the South is planning a rally next weekend in both Shelbyville and Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Across social media and at various public forums, citizens of Murfreesboro are divided as to what the appropriate response should be. Some people are firmly resolved, others are uncertain, and many are afraid. After a mediocre showing in Shelbyville the white supremacist protesters decided to skip the planned rally in Murfreesboro and instead head into Nashville to enjoy the nightlife. In early October it came to light that several white supremacist organizations including the League of the South, Vanguard America, the National Socialist Movement, and the Traditionalist Worker Party were planning a “White Lives Matter” rally in Murfreesboro and the neighboring city of Shelbyville. No doubt, an article is needed to address the ways that Murfreesboro temporarily became a place of otherness or, to evoke Foucault, a heterotopia.
