ABSTRACT

Digital media use can help foster the social participation of young children aged three to eight. An innovative project, Digital Citizenship Education for Democratic Participation, investigated this proposition between 2015 and 2018. Focussing on knowledge exchange practices relating to children’s digital literacy, and linking between children’s homes, school, and neighbourhood, the project involved teachers, parents, and the local community from the Caneças district in Portugal’s capital, Lisbon. Results indicate that targeted interventions help support young children’s engagement in citizenship, and their competencies in digital literacy. Adaptive in-service teacher training assists in sustaining the development of these positive outcomes.
