ABSTRACT

This chapter shows the perception of the European Union’s identity in international relations by ‘Others’ (third countries’ political elites, civil society, think-tanks etc.) and the meaning of the third parties’ discourse on the European Union’s (EU’s) identity in international relations, especially for the narration on its identity in international relations. In addition, the survey showed that the identity of a normative actor adopted by the European Union in the international relations is in crisis. The European Union itself is perceived in various ways in many regions of the world and there is no single narration on its identity coming from the outside world. Some consider it as an economic actor (Asia), others as past colonial power (Africa and Latin America), while some discern weaknesses in the normative narration on the European identity (US) or see it as a threat to its own specificity.
