ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the differing approaches to the concept of Europeanisation over time. Contemporary interpretations emphasise the projection of the policies and norms of the European Union. The chapter discusses the nature and effectiveness of the EU’s approach and in particular how this affects EU–Russia relations. The latter lies at the core of the current problems in EU–Russia relations. In contrast to the EU’s approach, Russia presents an alternative vision of Europeanisation. In spite of the views of many that Russia has turned its back on Europe, the chapter argues that Russia still identifies with Europe but is committed to a different vision. The chapter concludes that a more inclusive concept of Europeanisation could be developed. However, if differences over values and norms continue to grow, then perhaps the term will cease to be useful as a tool of analysis in EU–Russia relations.
