ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the trends and challenges in commemorating and teaching about the Holocaust in Israel, with an emphasis on the role of survivors in shaping Holocaust awareness. It shows that throughout the decades of Israeli statehood, Holocaust survivors actively called upon stakeholders and opinion shapers to mandate robust Holocaust education. Kovner alludes to a unified message of the post-Holocaust generation. However, Holocaust survivors in Israel, like all survivors around the world, have different views about their educational messages for the future. Spring is a season often associated with rebirth and the blossoming of nature. In Israel, the Jewish holiday of Passover ushers in spring. In Israel, two national days of remembrance follow the Passover holiday shortly thereafter: Yom Hashoah and Yom Hazikaron. A native of Lithuania, Kovner became an Israeli novelist and educator who championed Holocaust commemoration and education throughout his life.
