ABSTRACT

The capture format for a film is decided in pre-production by the director and director of photography (DP) along with the production designer and the visual effects supervisor. Creative choices along with camera size, post workflow, and costs are all a factor when determining the particular format. Digital formats use different codecs to produce full color or produce reduced color response and compression artifact. File format issues also come into play when determining what to supply editorial. These could be specific QuickTimes or other formats depending on the editorial workflow setup. The Academy Color Encoding System is an image format and color management system for the production, mastering, and long-term digital archiving of film and video content.
