ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides an in-depth examination of the development of security industry regulation in South Africa, where there has been enormous growth in the private sector component. It draws on contrasts between the “pre-Apartheid dispensation’‘ and “post-Apartheid expansion’‘. The book addresses the under-researched field of security industry regulation in Africa, and provides a unique overview of developments across the continent, with a particular focus on hybrid security services involving combinations of private and public providers. It analyzes the state of industry regulation in the post-Cold War period amongst nations which have made the transition away from soviet-governed socialism towards market-oriented and/or democracies. The book examines the state of play in that bastion of democracy and capitalism, the United States of America.
