ABSTRACT

The rising tide of human demand has become grossly unsustainable. Many ecosystems and renewable natural resources are under growing pressure. Far more energy, water and land is needed to sustain diets rich in livestock compared with those mainly comprised of plants, and therefore the rise of meat eating is another multiplier of impact that sits on top of rising human numbers. Deep change is required in how we feed our expanding population, both for reasons of environmental sustainability and food security. If human well-being is to be secured into the future, then change is urgently needed. By moving toward a more rational food system, the benefits would not only be seen in the health of the environment and resilience of the system, but also diminished suffering of farm animals and in improved human health indicators.
