ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the gain an insight into a range of perspectives on mentoring and have a greater understanding of the impact of mentoring. It recognises that mentoring is not always a positive experience for mentors or mentees and how this can be addressed. The chapter identifies the benefits of mentoring as part of a process of continual professional development. Comparisons between one mentoring experience and another can impact on the perspectives of mentoring for the beginning teacher. The chapter is based on the views and experiences of mentors, mentees and experienced teacher educators. Mentors told of the benefits of mentoring and how the experience is part of personal continuing professional development. We leave the final word to the beginning teachers who offer mentors the following advice: Be approachable. Be understanding.
