ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the value of practical work, and discusses statutory requirements and specialist advice regarding health and safety considerations to give mentors the confidence to support beginning teachers to plan purposeful practical activities. Beginning teachers will need high levels of support when starting to teach practical activities to ensure the statutory duties of care are followed at all times within the constraints of completing on time. The chapter emphasises the importance of practical work in the teaching of D&T to educate pupils in a wide range of materials, together with information on some of the key health and safety legislation and guidance in order to support teaching in the subject. The beginning teacher needs to be guided to ensure that practical activities are stimulating, relevant, and can be completed within the timeframe, using available resources and equipment.
