ABSTRACT

The emergence of cryptocurrencies and blockchain programming in recent years has opened new possibilities for the administration and consumption of sound recordings. However, there are significant risks that technological transformation will also enable and reinforce the unauthorized distribution and use of music. After outlining the emergence of blockchain technology, this chapter will contextualize what is becoming known as “cryptopiracy”, outlining the phenomenon’s main drivers and preliminary manifestations. Framing the issue as one to be addressed primarily in the marketplace, preventative measures will be suggested to counteract a rise in blockchain-supported piracy.
