ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the broad landscape of the use of contracting as a method of transferring payment for mental health services from one entity to another. Contracts can be used to integrate mental health services with substance use disorder treatments to effectively address the range of needs for individuals with dual diagnosis. The chapter discusses trends in financing and reimbursement that might be included in contracting mechanisms, such as capitation, pay for performance and value-based purchasing. Contracting can be used to integrate mental health services with other sectors in order to promote more comprehensive care and better meet the treatment needs of individuals with mental health problems. There are multiple layers to the criminal justice system or points of intervention and all have opportunities for integrating mental health services. The chapter also discusses integration of mental health services with other areas such as substance use, primary care, child welfare, criminal justice and schools.
