ABSTRACT

Progressive parking prices provide a customer-centric environment with a readily understandable variety of choices. They give drivers new options and avoid penalties for overstaying time at the meter. With new parking meter technology and a new philosophy of pricing, cities can enhance their economic vitality and be friendly to both people and cars. New meter technology that allows different prices for different parking durations enables these new progressive price structures. Payment by credit or debit cards rather than coins removes the difficulty of paying the higher fees for longer durations. Customers can maintain their previous payments for parking, and they have the option to pay more to stay longer. The choice is theirs, and the new options allow for improved customer satisfaction. Only 22 percent of the customers parked for more than the previous two-hour limit, but they contributed 59 percent of the total meter revenue.
