ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on domestic violence, sometimes referred to as intimate partner violence, sexual harassment, and sexual abuse. Intimate partner violence is a global public health crisis. It pervades all segments of society regardless of an individual’s race, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, country of origin, or sex. Although violence against women is well studied, little information exists on the worldwide burden of violence against men. In the 2006 World Report on Violence against Children, global estimates were that 73 million boys and 150 million girls experienced sexual violence with physical contact to include forced sexual intercourse and child sexual abuse. An important question to consider is why men and boys continue to perpetuate violence toward others. Some experts believe that the “man box” promotes messages of violence among and by men. Bystander intervention programs exist to combat violence on college campuses in the United States.
