ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the intersectionality of male gender and body image. Body image dissatisfaction can have profound effects on people, particularly the under-studied population of males. The male body is often viewed in terms of its functionality. Loss of functionality or perceptions of diminished functionality may negatively impact self-esteem and subsequently body image, thus leading to negative behaviors. Concern for body image was never absent in males, but rather, brought to the surface of public consciousness and dialogue. Male body image concerns have only surfaced in the past couple of decades. Loss of functionality or perceptions of diminished functionality may negatively impact self-esteem and subsequently body image, thus leading to negative behaviors. Social marketing and targeted marketing strategies play a strong role in how people perceive the body image.
