ABSTRACT

Hannah More, Percy (ed. Michael E. Sinatra, University of Montreal)

Produced at Covent Garden under the auspices of David Garrick, this tragedy deals with what happens when the Crusades take Percy away from Elwina, and her father forces her to marry Douglas (though the play is set during the Crusades, More adapted her source to give characters English names). What develops is less a tragedy of actions than one of character predicaments, displaying More’s poetic skill in capturing character passions and exploring the emotions produced by the exertion of power in matters of love.
