ABSTRACT

This chapter gives a brief overview of different approaches to critical reflection and a brief description of the model of critical reflection being learnt by the contributors. It also reviews some major learning and teaching issues covered in the literature on critical reflection and discuss our own approach to teaching and learning. The chapter includes a brief overview of the way critical reflection was taught in the programme in which the majority of contributors participated. The first absolutely necessary condition for critical reflection is a learning environment, which facilitates reflection. A reflective learning culture is usually not mainstream. There are a particular skill and art to engaging in reflective dialogue in a critically accepting environment. It involves close listening in order to develop further questions and dialogue to take the reflection to deeper levels. The chapter focuses on the development of an appropriate culture for, and strategies to support, the critical reflection process.
