ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the author's own experiences as a graduate student engaging in the process of Critical Reflection on Practice (CRoP). It describes the key themes related to critical acceptance and, through an overview of the author critical incident, show how critical acceptance provided the impetus for change – moving beyond thought into action. In the CRoP process, someone needs to take the initial step and be willing to share their incident first. Part of the CRoP process is about examining the language used to describe a critical incident in order to begin to unpack each incident. CRoP invites the professional to make room for their subjectivity and, in fact, suggests that leaving subjectivity out of the process impacts the ability for change to take deeper root. In the context of CRoP, honouring professionalism in an atmosphere of critical acceptance creates space where the personal and subjective is respected as an important element of professional development.
