ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights how incorporating concepts from narrative therapy (NT) in the Critical Reflection on Practice (CRoP) process can enhance group cohesion, member participation, CRoP effectiveness, and can empower reflecting participants in their reflective process. An important component of facilitating CRoP is creating a collaborative group environment where reflecting individuals feel safe and supported in exploring their critical incidents. Narrative therapy was one of the first therapies to effectively incorporate postmodern notions of truth into a systematic approach to address client concerns. A common technique used in NT to facilitate externalisation is speaking about the problem in the third person ‘it’ and by characterising the problem as a separate entity such as ‘failure’ or ‘sadness’. CRoP is an excellent tool to aid practitioners in professional development and growth, as it provides a structured and supportive approach to evaluate critical incidents.
