ABSTRACT

The Critical Reflection on Practice (CRoP) process felt both fulfilling and sometimes like a rollercoaster ride during the Master of Social Work (MSW) programme in Ontario, Canada. The essence of a CRoP group culture involves building on ‘safety and respect’ and ‘critical acceptance’. Critical acceptance should breathe life into the person sharing their incident as the CRoP process unfolds. Ironically, even though the CRoP course was part of the MSW programme, some of the other courses were in stark contrast to CRoP’s main tenets. One course focused on objective, ‘technical and rationally derided knowledge’ so that we would become outcome-oriented social workers at the end of that course. Learning the CRoP process and implementing it with a group can be an enriching experience. If group conflict arises, participants must balance their own needs with those of the group.
