ABSTRACT

The chapter starts with a brief history of lexicogrammar in second language acquisition and language testing. It then reviews a number of methods that have been used to measure foreign language learners’ knowledge of lexicogrammar directly (collostructional analyses and studies of lexicogrammatical complexity in learner corpora) and indirectly (in experimental studies and foreign language tests). It concludes with recommendations that underscore the importance of considering lexicogrammar a different construct than just the sum of lexis and grammar, relying on lexicogrammar to assess intermediate and advanced learners, including contextual variables in lexicogrammatical analyses, and developing context- or purpose-specific lexicogrammatical tests.
