ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses first at roads and then public transport in the Glasgow Eastern Area Renewal (GEAR) area. Public transport services in the GEAR area appear to be much the same as in any other part of the city, with radial services to and from the centre more frequent and varied than those between suburbs. The Clyde Valley is served by an extensive electrified rail system, and two lines pass through the GEAR area. As in other parts of the city, conventional bus services have been supplemented in recent years by the use of community minibuses. The transport facilities of the GEAR area are not inferior to those in other sectors in the city. Bus services are as good as anywhere. Every city is different and the lessons to be drawn from Glasgow's experience may not always be relevant to other places.
