ABSTRACT

Private housing in the Glasgow Eastern Area Renewal (GEAR) area has long been of exceptionally low price and low quality. Changes in the price of owner-occupied housing in GEAR throughout the 1970s were similar to those of the rest of the owner occupied stock in the city. However, the growth in the proportional scale and real value of owner-occupied housing in the GEAR area in the 1970s probably did little if anything to regenerate the area. Throughout Glasgow, a great deal has been done in recent years to revitalise older housing. Rehabilitation programmes in the east end have generally rehoused people as tenants. New building and extensive rehabilitation for sale can diversify the range of owner-occupied housing available. The provision of new housing has itself done something to improve the quality and range of private housing in the east end. The development of new housing schemes has met some of the population and social mix aims of the GEAR project.
