ABSTRACT

Members of the Mandan Hidatsa Arikara Nation gathered at the 2018 International Conference of Indigenous Archives, Libraries, and Museums to share a conversation about the past and the future of museums. They recall going to the Natural History Museum in New York as children and feeling embarrassed to find themselves grouped with the wildlife section, with the animals. The future of museums rests with institutions like the MHA Interpretive Center, a research and teaching centre that will welcome community members from on and off the reservation and will serve as a place to rebuild cultural knowledge and language.
