ABSTRACT

The environmental factors affecting the development of the nervous system-which has changed to a great extent and in diverse ways in the last decades-and the history of neurological functions and developmental processes can provide extra insight to help us understand dyslexia. The proposed minimal reading- and reading disorder model is based on the phases captured by Frith and Ehri, they are arranged along with two dimensions. If any are missing or under-functioning, it leads to a disorder in the development of the reading ability-by definition, dyslexia. If the reading does develop but it take the optimal, partly-phonological, partly-lexical route, we still encounter a reading disorder, since reading happen in the expected, usual way. The cultural changes at the beginning of the twenty-first century brought new reading methods. The emerging environment and culture should be analysed, and understanding atypically developing individuals could be of immense help in this process, because they are those who are more sensitive to the environmental factors.
