ABSTRACT

Most organizations rely on external IT and business processing services to help reduce costs and provide new innovative capabilities. The global outsourcing market continues to grow, and change, as Cloud services and digital business models begin to dominate the competitive landscape. However, as buyers outsource services globally, there comes a social responsibility to ensure that workers are treated fairly and humanely. Additionally, research shows that outsourcing work to developing global locations can have a positive impact by creating jobs and providing reliable income. Organizations are now applying global standards for corporate social responsibility (CSR), developed in the last two decades, to IT and business process outsourcing. In 2011, the Rockefeller Foundation initiated a programme to examine CSR in outsourcing and defined a new concept called Impact Sourcing. The Global Impact Sourcing Coalition (GISC), an industry consortium, is now defining and applying Impact Sourcing Standards. This chapter explores the history of CSR in outsourcing and describes how organizations should anticipate working with global Impact Sourcing Standards.
