ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the Confucian concept of learning which was self-consciously, if not self-critically, framed by scholars in the field of philosophy of education whose cultural roots lie in the East Asian tradition of Confucianism. In the field of Educational Sciences, which is still dominated by the modern Enlightenment perspective, Confucianism is usually considered as outdated even in this region. The chapter describes that a similar pattern of school experiences may be shared by most East Asians due to their shared tradition of Confucianism and history of westernization. It sketches the two traditions of the humanities, Eastern and Western, with an intellectual historical perspective in his essay 'Humanistic Traditions, East and West: Convergence and Divergence'. The workshop provided scholars from different East Asian countries with an opportunity to exchange their ideas and interpretations on their own Confucian tradition of learning for mutual understanding.
