ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the typology used to distinguish between good and bad jobs in our analyses. It explores the associations with successful transitions to good jobs in Italy. The chapter focuses on the issues of job quality and early labour market transitions, which become particularly salient when examining occupational segments for recent labour market entrants and those in the early stages of their careers. Upward moves in the labour market depend not only on the willingness and availability to take up emerging opportunities, but also on the ability to wait for, and be able to recognize, the ‘right opportunity’. Ideally, upon completing university, young people can quickly enter the labour market and maintain continuous employment. The probability of being in one of the some outcome states of the proposed typology varies according to the duration of unemployment experienced, the continuity of employment and the conditions of entry into the labour market.
