ABSTRACT

This chapter gives an indication of a particular LEA’s attempt to develop a system of performance appraisal which has the stated intention of upholding the rights of teachers to be provided with the support necessary to ensure effective teaching and learning in the classroom. Examples of the instruments used are presented in some detail, and the process of teacher appraisal, written from the perspective of a local authority inspector, is described. Even more important than these operational details is the context in which they are placed. Appraisal is not seen as being punitive, but as an essential part of professional and curriculum development. The author emphasizes that the person conducting the appraisal is equally in need of feedback on performance, so that appraisal becomes a two-way process.
