ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a stressful issue as being one which an individual feels he or she cannot cope with successfully and which causes him or her to experience unwanted physical, emotional or mental reactions. Stress will become a problem if there is a discrepancy between the demands on a teacher and his or her ability to manage. It therefore follows that the amount of stress which a person can withstand is differentiated according to the individual. Many authorities were addressing the issue of stress management by running one-day courses for headteachers, deputy headteachers and other staff. These courses were of two kinds: courses specifically dealing with identification and management of stress; and general management development courses, using material developed within the authority or elsewhere, which included elements or modules on stress and time management. An organisation that has a large number of highly stressed teachers will not be good for, or effective in, any organisational capacity.
