ABSTRACT

The Yasuní National Park (YNP) is the largest protected area in continental Ecuador and one of the world’s most genetically diverse areas. 1 At the same time, it is home to several Indigenous Peoples, including those in voluntary isolation (IPVI). 2 However, it is also an area subject to oil extraction, since it is considered strategic for Ecuador’s energy sector. Therefore, in its effort to meet its energy needs and sustain the national economy, the State encourages the use of non-renewable natural resources such as oil, which has not only led to environmental degradation but has also had effects on the rights of Indigenous Peoples, such as the right to consultation and to Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC).
