ABSTRACT

The main goals of education in South Korea can be summarised as the promotion of anti-communism, of patriotism and of morality. The equation is that to be anti-communist is to be both patriotic and moral. The ultimate goal of community education is the creation of a humane communitarian society where there is no exploitation. The transformation of society from one which has as its prime concern the accumulation of profit to one which puts humankind in the forefront is not merely a politico-economic task, but an educational one as well. Consequently, community education for decolonisation cannot avoid taking on the character of a resistance movement for the liberation of the nation and its people. Community education for decolonisation aims first to promote the intellectual understanding of the masses and then to unify it with their actions for emancipation. Socialism represents the best weapon of an oppressed and otherwise defenceless people in the achievement of liberation.
