ABSTRACT

In Chapter 3, Dr. Anthony Cruz and Dr. Franklyn Taylor discuss the unique characteristics and needs of the urban college student, such as socioeconomic status, nontraditional age, first-generation status, connection with local community, on- and off-campus employment, financial conditions, the intersection of academic and familial obligations and expectations, the complexity of managing the urban environment, as well as the effect of race, ethnicity, and culture. The chapter concludes with recommendations for actions and practices to improve the urban student experience.
