ABSTRACT

Chapter 6, written by Dr. Larry W. Lunsford and Dr. Edward G. Whipple, explores the duties of student services leaders in urban-serving institutions by investigating staffing, management, and decision-making processes and institutional factors that shape the leadership context, such as dispositions toward students, professional training, and working in a unionized environment. This chapter also explores the role of the senior student affairs officer as an agent of change for the institution both as an advocate for the student services unit and its programs, and as facilitator of partnerships across the institution and into the surrounding community.
