ABSTRACT

Chapter 9, written by Dr. Anna M. Ortiz, provides the conclusion to the book. Here, she draws conclusions from and makes recommendations on the basis of the experiences of senior student affairs leaders and the scholarly literature on urban-serving institutions. Highlighted is that student services in USIs should take a multidisciplinary approach and begin the process of preparing staff to provide culturally relevant/responsive student services. Developing partnerships with divisions of academic affairs is also important to the work of student affairs in USIs, as is involvement in college promise programs in their communities. Senior leaders should take leadership roles beyond the college or university. She concludes with a call to preserve the urban-serving institutions and makes recommendations for those seeking to work in USIs.
