ABSTRACT
The United Nations (UN) had a critical role in the struggle for independence of Portugal’s African colonies. As such, this chapter will pay attention to the bodies established by the General Assembly in the early 1960s, after the beginning of the colonial war in Angola, to gather information on the Portuguese colonies: the Subcommittee on the Situation in Angola and the Special Committee for the Territories under Portuguese Administration. The study of the activities of both bodies will be an illustration of the fact that the UN commitment to decolonization was a complex process, shaped by contradictions and ambiguities.
