ABSTRACT

In this chapter, Craig Gingrich-Philbrook and Jake Simmons navigate through the contested space of performance, performativity, research, and method in the current era of performance studies. The authors address tensions between academic and sociocultural/sociopolitical uses of performativity and performance and theorize about how these tensions play out in contemporary applications of performance studies research and method. This chapter also offers a preview of the structure and essays that comprise Research Methods in Performance Studies.
