ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the case of local Persian-language community radio programs in Stockholm, Sweden. It argues that despite the growth of transnational Persian-language diasporic media, the local outlets continue to give voice and represent local community in ways that no digital platform can by offering an important sounding board to establish identity within the local sociocultural context, which is proving crucial in the process of social integration into the Swedish society. The chapter focuses on the role of these outlets in the Iranian communities in Stockholm and the reasons for which these traditional forms of media have survived the test of time. It also focuses on several reasons for the continued relevance of Persian-language ethnic media in Stockholm and argues that despite changes in global media flows and media digitalization, these media practices have continued to thrive and remain relevant to the local community.
